Everything you need to know about swapping hobby gear on Adopt A Hobby.
- What is Adopt A Hobby?
▾
- Adopt A Hobby is a community for swapping hobby gear and equipment. Instead of letting the guitar, tennis racket, or baking kit you no longer use gather dust, you can exchange it with someone else and pick up gear for a hobby you actually want to try next. It's about reuse and trying new things — not buying and selling.
- How does it work?
▾
- Browse items with a quick swipe-style interface, find gear you're interested in, and propose an exchange with the owner. You two agree on a swap, meet or ship, and leave each other feedback afterward. Tap "Try this hobby!" on anything that catches your eye to start.
- Is this a marketplace? Can I buy or sell items?
▾
- Not in the first place — Adopt A Hobby is built around exchanges and community swaps, not cash sales. The goal is to help people move between hobbies affordably and keep good gear in use. However, if an exchange turns out to be difficult because of the value difference of two items, you can always negotiate about adding or asking for some cash. Up to you!
- What kinds of hobbies and gear are on the platform?
▾
- We cover a range of categories including (but not limited to) Sports, Cooking, Music, Arts & Crafts, and Outdoors. If you have gear from a hobby you've moved on from, there's very likely a category for it.
- How do exchanges and negotiations work?
▾
- When you find an item you want, you send the owner an offer. You can propose one of your own items in return, and the two of you negotiate until you agree. Once both sides confirm, you arrange the handoff.
- Do I have to offer an item to show interest?
▾
- No. You can express interest in an item even if you don't have something to offer in return yet — it's a way to signal demand and start a conversation with the owner.
- What are Wanted listings?
▾
- Wanted listings let you post gear you're hoping to find, so owners of that gear can reach out to you instead of you having to hunt for it. It helps match supply and demand across the community.
- How does feedback and rating work?
▾
- After an exchange, both people can leave a rating and a short review. This builds trust in the community and helps everyone know they're swapping with reliable members.
- Is my gear/exchange safe? How do you handle bad actors?
▾
- We take community safety seriously. You can report items or users that violate our guidelines, and our team reviews reports. Content moderation and reporting tools are in place to keep the platform welcoming.
- How do I report a problem with an item or user?
▾
- Use the report option on the item or listing. You'll be asked to briefly explain the issue so our team can review it quickly and take appropriate action.
- Do I need an account to browse?
▾
- You can explore items, but you'll need a free account to propose exchanges, post items, or message other members.
- Is Adopt A Hobby free to use?
▾
- Yes — creating an account and swapping gear is free. The platform is community-funded in spirit: you give gear you no longer need and get gear for your next hobby.
- How do referrals work?
▾
- You can invite people two ways: from the top menu, click your profile picture and choose "Invite a Friend"; or open "My Profile" and press the "Invite a Friend" button near the bottom of the page. When you invite friends to Adopt A Hobby, you grow the community with people you trust. And who knows — maybe we'll think of something great for the people who help us grow in the future…
- I have another question — how do I get help?
▾
- Reach out through the contact/feedback option in the app and our team will get back to you.
